The invention relates to a process for the preparation of a granular detergent component comprising the steps of: (i) forming the granular detergent component by drying an aqueous solution of a cationic surfactant to form a powder; (ii) optionally, densifying the powder; wherein the granular detergent component further comprises an acid, the granular detergent component having a reserve acidity of at least 1.0 g HCl/100g, preferably at least 3.0 g HCl/100g, and more preferably at least 8.0 g HCl/100g. The invention also relates to granular detergent components having a bulk density of at least 500 g/l comprising: at least 20 percent by weight of cationic surfacatant (preferably choline ester), and from 1 percent to 60 percent by weight of an acid, and optionally, up to 79 percent by weight of a detergent powder wherein the granular detergent component has a reserve acidity of at least 1.0 g HCl/100 g.
