The tool, suitable for use by right- and left-handed people, consists of a handle (2) with a projecting end which has a point beneath it to engage with the ring and lift it up. On each side of the handle the tool has a hook (13) formed by the up-turned end of a sliding element set in the recess in the handle so that a hook can be deployed on one side or the other. In a variant of the design the hooks can be in the form of two pivoted levers. During use one of the hooks is engaged with the lifted ring to enable the handle to be rolled from the can from either side and with either hand.
