摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it possible to assign intensity levels without division of pixels by forming the oriented films on transparent substrates with the oriented films of plural regions varying in the values of pretilt angles within unit pixels of a display element formed by holding ferroelectric liquid crystals between the plural transparent substrates formed with display electrodes and the oriented films. SOLUTION: The striped display electrodes 2 are formed by a photolithography technique and etching technique of ITO films formed on the transparent substrates 1 and insulating films 3 are deposited thereon. The oriented films 4 are formed by baking the polyimide material applied thereon. A rotating body 6 mounted with a rubbing member 5 (polyester cloth) is pressed onto the transparent substrate 1 and is moved under rotation, by which the oriented film is rubbed. The oriented film on the transparent substrate 1 is formed by the oriented films of the plural regions varying in the values of the pretilt angles within one pixel by changing the number of revolutions of the rotating body 6. As a result, the differences in driving conditions may be generated from the difference in the orientation states of the oriented film even with the ferroelectric liquid crystals. The assigning of intensity levels is thus made possible without dividing the pixels.
