Disclosed herein is an automated teller deposit balancing system. Deposits made by bank customers at an automated teller machine are processed at a deposit process ing center wherein the deposit envelopes are opened and the contents removed. A data entry system at the deposit processing center is used to process the information from the con tents of the envelopes. This information is entered into a deposit processing center log havi ng a record of each deposit processed. This log includes: 1) an automated teller identificat ion number indicating a specific ATM accepting the deposit, 2) a deposit total amount for e ach deposit made at the ATM, and 3) processing order indicator that indicates the relative s equence of the deposit envelope within the deposit envelopes processed at the processing ce nter. The bank downloads an ATM transaction log from the ATM network containing records fo r each deposit made at the automated teller machine This log includes: 1) an ATM identification number, 2) a transaction sequence number for each deposit made at the ATM, 3) a bank customer account number for each deposit made at the ATM, and 4) a dep osit total amount for each deposit made at the ATM, and 5) deposit date and time. A comparison system is used to match records within the deposit processing log to records within the ATM transaction log. The comparison system matches any records from t he logs that include an identical and unique deposit amount, then matches any remai ning records from the logs that have not been previously matched and have a processin g order indicator that indicates an identical relative sequence of a deposit envelope be tween two previously matched records in the transaction log file. The ATM deposit processi ng system can also use the account number read from deposit slips included in the envelope to find the correct transaction log record for the deposit.
