New method (I) of treating biogas produced by anaerobic fermentations, particularly those which occur in cavities in landfill sites, particularly those for domestic waste, comprises a selective absorption under pressure of compounds other than CH4, particularly CO2 and H2S, by: (a) an initial compression to about 1,500 kPA; (b) purification by differentially dissolving CO2 and H2S; (c) drying; (d) a second compression to about 25,000 kPa; and (e) cooling and storage of the gas with a view to its use as a domestic or motor fuel. Also claimed is a device for carrying out (I) comprising: a primary compressor for step (a), a washing tower for step (b), a means of removing CO2 and H2S from the water resulting from step (b), a means of drying the biogas for step (c), and a secondary compressor for step (d).
