A fastening mechanism for securing a container having corner socket fittings onto a vehicle frame bearer 9, comprises a rotary stud 1 having an elongated head and a shank, the latter extending through a guide collar 8 on a base plate 10 adapted to be fixed to the vehicle frame bearer and carrying at its other end a radially projecting arm 11 for rotating the stud, in which the head of the stud is in two parts, an upper part 17 secured to the end of the shank and a lower part 12 having end faces congruent with the lower surface of the upper part and which is releasably engaged for rotation with the shank. In the construction shown the shank is provided with a radially positioned blind hole in which is disposed a helical compression spring 15 and a detent ball 13 the ball engaging a recess in the lower part 12 of the head so that the lower part is normally held by the detent ball so that it rotates with the upper part of the head but so that the force of the spring can be overcome to allow the upper part of the head of the shank to rotate without rotating the lower part. In a modification the spring and ball are disposed in a blind bore in the part 12 and engage a recess in the shank. The undersides of both the upper part of each head and the lower part of each head are provided with ramp surfaces for ease of engagement with the corner fitting; as shown the collar 8 is provided with an abutment 20 and the lower head part 12 has a recess which can receive the abutment 20 the abutment locating the head in the releasing position; similarly the lower head part 12 has an abutment 20 which engages a recess in the upper head part to locate it in the releasing position. The mechanism is for use with comer fittings of the different thicknesses, the lower part rotates with the upper part when the thinner comer fitting is to be engaged but that the upper part only rotates when the thicker corner fitting is to be engaged. |
