The invention relates to a process for preparing piperidine derivatives II, in which A is -CH2-CH2-, -CH2 CH2-CH2-, -CH2-CH2-CH2-CH2, -CH2-O-, -CH2-CH2-O- or -CH2 CH2-CH2-O-, in which one or two hydrogen atoms can be replaced by an alkyl radical; R1 is hydrogen, halogen, alkylsulphonyl or aminosulphonyl; R2 is hydrogen, amino, mono- or dialkylamino, arylalkylamino or alkylcarbonylamino; and R3 and R4 are both, independently, hydrogen or alkyl. The compounds II can be used therapeutically as agents which act on mobility in the gastrointestinal region. They can also be used a starting substances when preparing other therapeutically active compounds. The invention also relates to intermediates XVII in which P1 is a protecting group.
