A method and apparatus for painting all or part of a cut edge of a precoated steel sheet or its shaped article to which a masking film is attached, wherein a painting pad comprised of a sponge or nonwoven fabric and/or woven fabric is impregnated with a paint, the surface of the painting pad is wiped with gas to remove the excess paint, then the painting pad is pressed against the cut edge of the precoated steel sheet under force control. <IMAGE>
