A free-standing bird feeder device comprises a generally cylindrical food container, a substantially circular feeding platform supported by a post, and a substantially spherical or ellipsoidal squirrel guard to prevent a squirrel or like ground animal from gaining access to the seed or other food on the feeding platform. The squirrel guard may be made of either a rigid material, or a flexible material to be inflated with air or foam. The spherical or ellipsoidal shape of the bird feeder provides aerodynamic characteristics, causing the air from the wind to form a laminar flow instead of a turbulent flow. This invention relates to bird feeders, more particularly to a bird feeder having a squirrel guard.
