A buoyant drum (1) wound with pipeline (2) is towed behind - or alongside - a vessel (8). The towing attachment (7) permits no longitudinal or lateral relative movement. The demountable structure (9) contains a tensioner (10) and guide roller (12) for the pipeline. It also adds ballast weights (13) to give negative buoyancy.
