Pre-synchronised ATM networks

In a method of controlling jitter in an ATM (broadband ISDN) connection established through a network the nodes of which each include a frame counter; frame counters at each node are (at least initially) synchronised and activated using detected propagation delays and mismatches in time slot boundaries between adjacent nodes, delay bounds at each node and the frame size of the connection; and cells passing through each node are serviced based on the value of the corresponding frame counter. Once synchronised at the set up stage the counters may operate independently.
