Thioalkane- alpha , beta -diketones of the formula in which R<1> is C1-C12-alkyl, C2-C12-alkenyl, C2-C12-alkinyl, C3 -C12-cycloalkyl, C6-C12-Ar-C1-C6-alkyl, preferably benzyl, optionally substituted C6-C12-aryl, preferably phenyl, a 5- or 6-membered heterocycle with oxygen, sulphur and/or nitrogen as the hetero atom and 0 to 3 double bonds, it being possible for the heterocycle to be substituted by 1 to 3 C1-C3-alkyl groups, or is heterocyclomethyl, R<2> is hydrogen or C1-C4-alkyl, R<3> and R<4> independently of one another are hydrogen, C1-C8-alkyl, C2-C8-alkenyl, C2-C8-alkinyl, C5-C12-cycloalkyl, C6-C12 -aryl, preferably phenyl, or R<2> and R<3> together or R<3> and R<4> together are a divalent radical which, together with the C atom 3, or with the C atoms 1, 2 and 3, forms a 5- to 7-membered, preferably a 5- to 6-membered ring containing 0 to 2 hetero atoms from the series comprising nitrogen, oxygen and sulphur, have interesting organoleptic properties and are therefore suitable as flavourings.
