PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a latex which, when used for a binder for a battery, can give a coating film not undergoing the separation of an active material even after repeated charging and discharge, being useful for obtaining a high-capacity battery and markedly reduced in the extent of rusting by selecting a latex having a specified electric conductivity. SOLUTION: A latex having an electric conductivity of 1,000μS/cm or below, desirably 500$μS/cm or below, more desirably 250μS/cm or below when measured in a solid concentration of 10wt.% is selected. This latex can be produced by emulsion-polymerizing a nonionic monomer (e.g. styrene and 2-ethylhexyl acrylate) in the presence of a nonionic surfactant (e.g. polyoxyethylene nonyl phenyl ether) and a nonionic polymerization initiator e.g. 2,2'-azobis[2-methyl- N-(2-hydroxyethyl)propionamide]}.
