PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a piston for an internal combustion engine, in which deposit separating performance on the outer periphery of a piston is improved. SOLUTION: In a piston for an internal combustion engine, the piston outer peripheral part is formed into an inclined surface 3, many grooves extending in the piston circumferential direction are formed on the inclined surface 3, the roughness of the inclined surface 3 is set in the range of Rz 1 to 15μm, and a water repellent material film 6 is formed on it. The water repellent material is made of fluoroalkyl group contained SiO2 . The roughness is set to Rz 1 toαμm(a=15 to 22), and directivity is provided to water repellency of the water repellent material film 6.
