PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject compound that is useful as a raw material for cosmetic perfumes under mild conditions in high selectivity and yield by using a rhodium catalyst, a solvent and perchloric acid in combination. SOLUTION: (A) 4-t-Butylphenol is hydrogenated over (B) a rhodium catalyst [for example, metallic rhodium, a rhodium compound or Rh on carbon (1-10wt.%, preferably 3-5wt.%) in (C) a solvent (for example, a 5-10C alkane, a 4-10C ether or 1-6C alcohol) using (D) perchloric acid in an amount of 0.05-10 moles per mole of the rhodium atom. In an preferred embodiment, the component B is used in an amount of 0.5-10wt.% based on the component A on the dry basis, the reaction is carried out at a temperature of 20-100 deg.C and the partial pressure of hydrogen of 3×10<5> -2×10<6> Pa. |
