1287810 Stripping electric cables using radiation BURROUGHS CORP 24 Feb 1970 [3 March 1969] 9349/70 Heading H2C A method for providing an exposed length of conductor or conductors suitable for making electrical contact in a length of elastomeric insulated cable 15, Fig. 5, comprising the steps of exposing an area intermediate the ends of said cable length to irradiation to heat the cable thereby stripping a length of insulation therefrom to expose a length 33 of conductor or conductors 13 therein, severing the insulation adjacent the exposed conductor or conductors and sliding the severed length 37 axially over the irradiation-exposed conductor or conductors. The exposed conductor or conductors 13 may be cleaned ultrasonically. The irradiation is preferably infra-red or ultra-violet. Apparatus in which the method may be performed comprises sources of irradiation 17, 19, Fig. 2, a jig 23 for holding the cable, and apertured masks 25. Infra-red radiation, for example, is applied for between 5 and 10 seconds at a temperature of 2000‹ F. to 2500‹ F. disintegrates and evaporates the insulation. Fumes may be removed by a hood and fan or by compressed air forced through the work area. |
