A foil suitable for thin layer chromatography or electrophoreses comprises a flexible synthetic resin substrate coated with a thin coherent film of polymeric titanium dioxide and/or zirconium dioxide and a top coating of a sorption agent such as silica gel, kieselguhr, aluminium oxide, magnesium oxide, silicates, e.g. magnesium trisilicate, phosphates, e.g. calcium phosphate, molecular sieves, zeolites, polyamides, cellulose and cellulose derivatives as well as organic or inorganic ion exchangers. The foil may be made by applying to one or both faces of the substrate e.g. by painting, spraying or rollers, a titanic or zirconic acid ester or a volatile organic solvent, evaporating the solvent and hydrolysing the coating e.g. by steam to form the oxide film and then applying the sorption agent to one face of the substrate by similar methods. Suitable esters are titanates or zirconates of alkyl (C 1 - C 12 ), especially n-butyl, methyl linaloyl or cyclohexanyl radicals. The substrate is preferably a polyester such as polyethylene terephthalate but polyolefins, polyamides, vinyl polymers, acrylics and cellulosic resins may be used. |
