Method for monitoring the condition of electrodes in an optical fibre splicing appts. in which the fibre ends are welded together by heating in an electric light beam created by applying an electric voltage between electrodes, esp. useful for indicating dirty electrodes that need cleaning or are in a generally poor condition, comprises measuring the max. and/or mean voltage value over a certain period of time, and/or the ignition and/or lighting voltage, and evaluating the data. The device for carrying out the method is also claimed.
