To provide more floor space for the drying and smoothing units of a paper machine, the units employed in the wet production stage are arranged in identical, symmetrical pairs, vertically above each other, thus independently producing paper webs. A preferred system is to feed paper pulp onto screen drums equipped with pressure rollers. The vertically moving paper webs thus produced are combined to a laminate when emerging from the lowermost unit.
