New method (I) of making leather water-resistant and oil-resistant comprises treatment with a feeding oil (II) and the fixing of this oil, where (II) is water-repellent and the fixing agent is a cationic fluorinated copolymer (III). Also claimed is leather treated according to (I). (II) is a derivative of a fatty alcohol, acid or amine comprising a 12-24C aliphatic chain. (III) comprises: (a) 50-92 wt.% (70-90 wt.% preferred) of at least one monomer of formula Rf-B-O-C(O)-C(R)=C(H)-R: - Rf = 2-20C perfluoride group (4-16C preferred); B = hydrocarbon group, possibly substituted with one or more O, S and N atoms (CH2CH2 preferred); - R = H or 1-4C alkyl group, but at least one is H (both preferred); (b) 1-25 wt.% (8-18 wt.% preferred) of at least one monomer of formula (R1)(R2)N-B'-O-C(O)-C(R')=CH2 (dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate and tert. butyl aminoethyl methacrylate preferred), where B' = 1-4C alkylene group; R' = H or 1-4C alkyl group; R1, R2 = H, 1-18C alkyl group, hydroxyethyl, or benzyl group; or R1, R2 and N from a morpholino, piperidino or pyrrolidinyl-1 group; (c) 1-25 wt.% (2-10 wt.% preferred) of a vinyl derivative of formula R"-C(H)=CH2 (vinyl acetate preferred), where R" = 1-18C alkyl carboxylate or alkyl ether group; and (d) 0-10 wt.% (0-8 wt.% preferred) of a fourth type of monomer. 1.5-12 wt.% of (II) and 0.1-2 wt.% (III) (3-7 and 0.3-1.5 wt.% preferred respectively) are used compared to the weight of wet-blue leather. (I) is carried out at 15-70 deg C (40-60 deg C preferred).
