The invention concerns a latching contact system for the upper part of a motor vehicle steering column comprising a revolving electric contactor, including an automatic latching contact device (400) between the revolving contactor and the steering wheel or the steering column when they are assembled, which automatic latching contact device (400) comprises a first support (320; 620) bearing one of the contacts (327), a second support (220, 520) bearing the other contact and integral with a floating base (250, 550), moving freely in translation at least in one direction not parallel to the direction bringing the revolving contactor closer (2) to the steering wheel or the steering column, such that when they are assembled, the floating base (250, 550) slides on a stressing element (350, 650) linked to the first support (320, 620) to control the latching contact.
