Bags are stacked and fed to a packaging machine by a mechanism with a motor-driven endless circulating chain conveyor (KF) having several spaced surfaces (4), on which stacks of bags are placed. The surfaces move so that the stacks of bags are brought next to the inlet of the machine. The surfaces are arranged so that they are held horizontally on all sections (S1-S6) and circulate in a paternoster fashion. In the horizontal section (S4) in which the bags are discharged, the surfaces pass from a position above the inlet to a position next to the inlet, while at the same time a retainer (RH) holds the bag stack in position and transfers it to the inlet. Preferably, the chain conveyor has two chains (3) side by side, passing over deflection sprockets (26), between and on which the surfaces are fastened on guides (8,9) supported on vertical and horizontal guide rails (6,7).
