The press has a drive device (2) by means of which a lifting movement is to be imparted to a pushrod. A tool (9) has at least one stage, whose upper tool is joined to the pushrod and whose lower tool is joined to a thrust bearing. There is a coupling device (7) through which the force flow between the drive device and the tool can be interrupted. A storage device (25) is set up to store force values depending on pushrod position. A sensor device determines the force exerted on the tool or tool stage and generates a corresponding output signal. A monitoring device (24), to which the sensor device is connected, separates the coupling device if a fault situation is present. The stored force values are set-points which occur with undisturbed operation of the press. The monitoring device separates the coupling device when the measured force deviates by more than a certain amount from the set-point.
