The invention relates to a method for indicating groups at risk of cardiovascular diseases. In particular, the invention offers the possibility of determining whether a person, by smoking, has an increased risk of cardiovascular disease on the basis of a genetic predisposition. A polymorphism has now been found which is clearly associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease in smokers in contrast to non-smokers. Smokers who possess a specific allele are at appreciably greater risk than smokers who do not possess this allele.
