The surveying unit has a telescope (22) located rotationally about a horizontal axis at a main housing (23) of an overall station. A vertical light passage opening (42) is designed in the main housing. So that the distance measuring light, which the telescope transmits from a light transmitting element (37), can be led through in the main housing. A prism unit is arranged with a cube corner prism at a base point. A centring operation is carried out vertically downwards by rotating the telescope. Then a distance measurement can be carried out, by aligning the distance measuring light in the cube corners prism across the telescope.
