The gas generator for airbags has two chambers (10, 11) each contain a gaseous component. On mixing, these form a reactive gas. There is an igniter (12). Preferably the igniter (12) is so arranged that the combustion gases released from it, rupture the partition (26) dividing the chambers. This arrangement causes both the partition and an outer wall (25) of one chamber to be ruptured. The chambers are arranged in series. The gases are in the fluid state, one combustible and dilute, the other non combustible.
