The invention concerns the use of a composition containing: A) CaCO3; B) CaCl2 and/or CaSO4 and optionally magnesium salts; and C) NaHCO3 and optionally KHCO3, components A and B being present in substance amount ratios of between 0.01:1 and 2:1 and components B and C being present in substance amount ratios of between 1:3 and 2:1. The composition is used as an additive to seawater in which marine animals are reared or kept.
