A synthetic fibre mat, produced as a spun-bonded or melt-blown net, is designed to soak up liquids and aqueous solutions in particular. Most of its individual fibres have a quenched crystalline and corresponding surface texture; molecules or molecular conglomerates of hydrophilic substances rest on the surface of the fibres, and the wt. per sq.m. of the mat is set according to the amount of liquid to be absorbed per sq.m. Pref. fibres are polyolefin, polyester, polyamide or mixtures of these; the preferred hydrophilic substances are e.g. ethoxylating products; preferred mats contain fine conglomerates of amorphous silicic acid and swelling polymers. The mat is best roughened to increase the surface area as well as adhesion of the molecules/their conglomerates of hydrophilic substances. It is easy to check whether the fibres have the desired texture by means, e.g., an electron microscope; it is desirable to have 75% of the fibres (or more) with the quenched crystalline texture. ADVANTAGE - The mat is an extremely high absorptive capacity. The invention also includes a simple way of producing it.
