Process for stacking books

The process for stacking books (5) uses a device comprising several delivery devices one after another and has these devices transporting books into and out of a stacking shaft (43). They comprise several linear delivery devices (19) and at least one rotating device (17) that can be operated selectively, by which books can be turned before entering the stacking shaft. The position of each book in transport direction T, on at least one linear delivery device, is determined. The remaining transport path is determined for each book up to a hand-over position, in which it is taken over by a subsequent delivery device and the corresponding linear delivery device transports each book in path-controlled fashion into the hand-over position.
