The method involves alternately operating the sensor between its normal operating temp. and a lower rest temp. associated with a measurable sensor signal. The temp. is periodically varied between the two levels. A sensor operated continuously at the lower temp., or periodically being at the lower temp., is heated to its operating temp., either immediately or outside the periodical heating cycle, if a desired value for the sensor signal is exceeded as a result of a target gas being detected; the heating ensures that an accurate sensor signal is obtained.
