[Also in Divisions D1-D2] A stay member comprises an end fitting enclosing the end portion of a rigid rod of electrically insulating material having a pre-formed divergence 2, Fig. 1, towards the end portion, the end fitting having a housing 4 with a mouth and a divergence away from the mouth which conforms to the enlargement, the mouth of the housing being strengthened against splaying apart by the wedging action of the complementary divergencies. The tension rod (1), Fig. 2 (not shown), is made from built-up sheets of pre-impregnated uni-directional glass fibre which are rolled up into an approximately rod form with frustoconical ends and then cured in a mould. The end fitting is assembled by holding half-sleeves 4 in contact with the taper, by means of a tool having spigots which engage the holes 8, until the outer sleeve 10 is threaded on the composite sleeve. The outer sleeve 10 is tightened to engage a surface 11 with the rod end to cause wedging of the complementary divergent surfaces. In a modification stem 13 can be screwthreaded. In a further embodiment the tension rod (21), Fig. 3 (not shown), has a rectangular crosssection and the outer sleeve (30) is internally screw-threaded to receive an eye-bolt (31). The internal screw threads in the outer sleeve may be of opposed senses or of dissimilar pitch but like sense. In a further embodiment an externally screw-threaded plug (40), Fig. 5 (not shown), is engaged within an outer sleeve (41) against the end of the tension rod. The half sleeves (45) are arranged to abut an inward shoulder of the outer sleeve when the plug (40) is tightened. In a further embodiment an end fitting (1), Fig. 6 (not shown), is in the shape of a tuning fork so that the taper formed between its legs can engage the tapered end of a tension rod which may be bonded in situ. A textile or steel filament hoop winding may be applied tightly over the legs. In a further embodiment composite cast sleeves (10), Fig. 9 (not shown), comprise two mirror-image halves which are bolted together over the end of a tension rod. In a further embodiment a composite sleeve end fitting is made up of two components each having a semi-cylindrical screw-threaded stem which are held together by an internally screwthreaded anchor sleeve (23), Fig. 11. A hoop winding (26) holds the two parts together. |
