A process for the manufacture of a hydrophilic, humectant, soft, pliant single-ply or multi-ply absorbent papers are prepared by a process comprising: providing a moving foraminous support, providing a headbox; said moving foraminous support adapted to form a nascent web by depositing furnish upon said foraminous support; providing wet pressing means operatively connected to said moving foraminous support to receive said nascent web and for dewatering of said nascent web by overall compaction thereof and providing a Yankee dryer operatively connected to said wet pressing means and adapted to receive and dry the nascent web; supplying a furnish to said headbox comprising: cellulosic papermaking fiber consisting essentially of recycle fiber, hardwood fiber, softwood fiber, and mixtures thereof; and optionally up to 50% synthetic fibers and adding a softener which has a melting range of about 0 DEG -40 DEG C wherein the softener comprises an imidazoline moiety formulated in organic comppounds selected from the group consisting of alkoxylated aliphatic polyols, alkoxylated aliphatic diols, aliphatic polyols, aliphatic diols and a mixture of these compounds, wherein the process of adding the softener is controlled to retain a ratio of the average particle size of dispersed softener to the average fiber diameter in the range of about 0.01 to 15 percent; forming a nascent web by depositing said furnish on said moving foraminous support; wet pressing said nascent web; transferring said nascent web to said Yankee dryer, adhering said web to said Yankee, creping said web from said Yankee; recovering a creped, dried absorbent paper product having a serpentine configuration in the form of a hydrophilic, humectant, soft, pliant, single-ply or multi-ply napkin, towel, bathroom tissue, or facial tissue. These products are suitably also prepared using through air drying methods with or without the use of a Yankee dryer and the products exhibit a unique combination of properties designed to appeal to consumer preferences. In many applications, these products need not be creped, and in that case they do not have the serpentine configuration. |
