PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a secondary battery having a dissolving rate improved for the dissolution of a conductive agent in an alkaline electrolyte, and the stability of the conductive agent enhanced by applying the constitution that the conductive agent is mainly composed of CoO and the prescribed amount of a Co3 O4 surface layer is formed, regarding a positive electrode with a current collector filled with paste containing nickel hydroxide powder as well as the conductive agent. SOLUTION: Regarding an alkaline secondary battery, a bottomed cylindrical vessel 1 houses an electrode group 5 made of a paste type positive electrode 2, a separator 3 and a negative electrode 4 stacked on top of each other and spirally wound. The positive electrode 2 is formed to have a structure with a current collector filled with paste containing nickel hydroxide powder as well as a conductive agent. Also, a Co3 O4 layer is formed on the surface of the conductive agent, and contains particles mainly composed of CoO. The percentage of Co3 O4 by weight for the CoO particles is between 0.2%, and 50%. The positive electrode 2 is manufactured by preparing the paste by kneading the nickel hydroxide powder with the conductive agent together with a binding agent in the presence of water, filling the current collector with the paste or applying the paste thereto, and then drying and pressure molding the paste. |
