Tensile rods 8 extended between brackets 5 on the web and brackets 6 on the converter and rods 9 between U-shaped brackets 7 on the converter and brackets 14 on the web formed with angled plates (5, 16). The brackets 5 comprise two bracket rings 19 attached to web 4 and reinforcing ribs 20 parallel to the longitudinal axis of converter 1. Openings 22 in web 4 equal in width to brackets 5 provided access to the rod heads. The converter wall 1a carries a similar bracket ring 23 in which brackets 6 are similarly formed. In a modification (Fig. 3), a reinforcing bracket ring is welded to the wall 1a intermediate the rings 2 and 3, the rods 8 being attached thereto.
