The components react in a zone between the surface of a liquid component and the internal surface or surfaces of a protective hood. The other component is admitted to the reaction zone through an opening in the wall of the hood. The reaction zone volume is adjusted as required by moving the hood towards or away from the liquid surface. If required, the reaction product or products can then be removed from the reaction zone.
