FIELD: industrial organic synthesis. SUBSTANCE: catalyst involved consists of ZSM-5-type zeolite modified by silicon and magnesium compounds and a metal oxide component containing 65-70% ZnO, 29-34% Cr<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>, and 1% W<SB>2</SB>O<SB>5</SB> at zeolite to metal oxide component weight ratio from 3:7 to 7:3. Process is carried out at 380-440 C, weight velocity of toluene 1-3 h and space velocity of synthesis gas from 1000 to 10000 h . The same result may be achieved when zeolite contains 1-3 and 4-15% silicon and magnesium compounds, respectively. In another embodiment of process using the same catalyst at process parameters, flow-circulation system is employed, wherein gas stream coming out of reactor is cooled, condensed reaction products are separated, and a part of gas stream is recycled.
