The crate (1) comprises a bottom and lateral walls (5,6,7,8) with an opening at their free end. Retractable supports (30,50) can move between a first fitting position (A) of two identical crates and a second position of stacking (B) in which the upper crate rests with a least fitting on the underneath crate (1). These supports extend in the stacking position (B) through the crate opening between two opposite lateral walls in order to support an upper crate. In fitting position (A) they free a sufficient space inside the crate to allow the passage of another identical crate to fit into the underneath crate. There are one or more loading zones (Z1, Z2) between the lateral walls. The retractable supports in their fitting position (A) are separated locally in a direction determined by a distance (L2) less than a dimension (L4) of one of the loading zones on which they encroach. In their position (B) the retractable supports are separated by a distance (L6) greater than the loading zone dimension (L4).
