The topical application of an opioid analgesic agent to an area of itching and/or skin irritation of a patient, including providing a quantity of an opioid analgesic agent, and mixing the opioid analgesic agent with a non-transdermal carrying agent. Applying the mixture of the opioid analgesic agent and non-transdermal carrying agent to the area of the patient to produce a reduction in itching and/or skin irritation.
