The prosthesis consists of a shank (1) for anchoring in the humerus having a metaphysis section (3) with a hemispherical head (13) attached to it, and at least one aperture (5) to receive bone fragments. Where appropriate the aperture(s) can be covered by plates (6, 7) coated with a porous metal. The plates can be connected by a fixing screw (10) passing through the aperture. The shank of the prosthesis is made from stainless steel or a titanium or cobalt-chrome alloy, and the hemispherical head can be of stainless steel or a chrome-cobalt alloy.
