Difficulty soluble azo pigments (I) are prepared by (i) diazotising an amine (II):- and coupling the diazo compound with a compound of the formula H-K, or (ii) reacting an amine (III) with an acid halide (IV), preferably the acid chloride, R1 is H, (substituted) hydrocarbyl or acyl, R2 is H, cyano, acyl or -CX-NH R1, K is a residue of the aromatic or heterocyclic series or a radical with the formula D-CO-CH-CO-NH-E,D is a (substituted) hydrocarbon residue which may also contain a hetero atom, E is a residue of aromatic character, Y is -CO- or -SO2-, X is O, S, Se or =NR1, and the rings A and B may carry other substituents, but not free carboxyl and sulphonic acid groups.
