Dyes for fibres containing nitrogen, comprises dye stuffs or dye precursors in a carrier, containing 2-nitro-6- aminomethyl- phenol compounds of formula (I) as direct dye components. In (I), R1, R2 = 1-4 C alkyl, allyl or 2-4 C hydroxyalkyl, or they can combine with the N atom to form a pyrrolidine, oxazoline, piperidine, piperazine or morpholine ring. Also claimed is a method for dyeing human hair comprising applying the dye onto the hair and then rinsing out excess dye after it has been left in for a certain length of time.
