The drive shaft of the compressor (6) has two pulley wheels with one (9) on a fixed shaft which is driven by one belt (5) from the electric motor (2) and the other (10) driven by a main drive belt and a clutch (8) from the crankshaft pulley. This clutch is disengaged when the engine has stopped, enabling the compressor to be driven without turning the engine. The electric motor is coupled to the compressor drive by a second clutch (7). The standby operation is controlled at set intervals by a timing control and by temperature sensors, to keep the inside of the vehicle at comfortable levels.
