A seating sensor is fixed to a back portion of a seat of an automobile or to a seat body, and adapted to calculate the stature and weight of a seated person, determine the physical constitution of a seated person, and judge whether what is seated is a person or a thing. On the basis of the results of such calculation and judgement, the operation of an air bag is controlled, and the position of the seat, an angle of inclination of the back portion and the position of a steering wheel are automatically regulated, or the operation of a theft preventing means is actuated. The seating sensor is constituted of an element, the electric resistance value of which varies in accordance with the level of a pressing force applied thereto, and the pressing force (pressed position) is detected on the basis of the variation of the electric resistance value.
