[Also in Division C3] Compositions suitable for coating comprise a solution in an organic solvent of a heathardenable non-gelled interpolymer of (A) an amide of an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid, and (B) ethylenically unsaturated material copolymerisable with the amide and carrying an hydroxy group, the interpolymer having amido hydrogen atoms at least partially replaced by the structure in which R represents H or a furyl, aromatic or saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon radical containing up to 10 C atoms, and R, represents H or the etherification residue of an aliphatic alcohol containing up to 10 C atoms; and alkoxy-terminated, or partly hydroxy - and partly alkoxy-terminated, organosilicon resinous material condensed onto a side chain of the interpolymer. Component (A) is suitably acrylamide and component (B) may be a monoethylenically unsaturated alcohol, a monoester of a polyhydric alcohol and a monoethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid, e.g. hydroxyethyl acrylate, an ether of a polyhydric alcohol and a monoethylenically unsaturated alcohol, a hydroxyl-containing polyethylenically unsaturated polyester resin, 2- hydroxymethyl-5-norbornene, or an unsaturated fatty alcohol corresponding to a drying oil fatty acid. The interpolymer may also contain units of one or more other components containing the CH 2 =C< group, e.g. styrene, ethyl acrylate and methacrylic acid. The preferred organo-silicon component is an organopolysiloxane having the unit formula: where R is a monovalent hydrocarbon radical, R' comprises an organic radical or radicals of which at least 20% is alkoxy, n has an average value of 1 to 2, m has an average value of at least 0.1, the sum of m+n being not greater than 3, and there are, on average, at least 1.2 R' groups per polysiloxane molecule. The coating compositions may also include a urea-, melamine- or benzoguanamineformaldehyde condensate or an etherified, e.g. butylated, derivative thereof, or a vinyl resin, e.g. partially hydrolysed vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate copolymer. Other optional components include pigments, e.g. titanium dioxide, dyes, flow control agents and waxes. In Examples the compositions are coated on aluminium coil stock using 40 gauge wound wire rod drawdowns, and the coatings are cured at 475‹F, for 90 seconds. |
