In an electric melting furnace with means for continuously weighing the consumable electrode for control purposes, the arrangement is such that the weight measurement is unaffected by movements of the movable power supply cable 26. A platform 4 supports the weight of the electrode and electrode feed means 13, and is in turn supported by the weight-sensitive means, e.g. load cells 3, and the supply cable 26 is connected at one end to and supported by the feed means 13 and is supported at the other end by the platform 4, a flexible conductor 30 being connected between the end of the cable supported by platform 4 and a supply terminal 31. Terminal 31 is fixed at 32 or has a second movable supply cable connecting it to a fixed point, to allow for vertical and horizontal movement of the whole upper furnace part for recharging purposes.
