Product for final storage of radioactive ion exchange resins

A mixed resin product which is suitable for final storage, comprising cation- and anion-exchange resins embedded in a bitumen or cement matrix, each resin having a matrix consisting of a random polymeric network and functional groups consisting of anchor groups with anionic or cationic fixed ions and cationic or anionic counter-ions respectively. These resins are pretreated by (a) heating in a reactor for at least two hrs. at 180-250 deg C with at least partial loss of the functional groups on the anion exchange resin (R1), and then (b) reacting with liquid sulphur at 110-150 deg C for 6-11 hrs. Also claimed is a cation exchange resin (R2) which has been subjected to treatment (b) as above, with a random polymeric network matrix and functional groups containing an anchor group with anionic fixed ion and an anchor group with cationic counter-ion, this resin being capable, when embedded in bitumen or cement, of being stored even in moist media without destruction of the matrix.
