In a friction clutch for a motor vehicle wherein two driven discs 5a, 5b are normally clamped between a flywheel 7, intermediate plate 9 and presser plate 3 by springs 30 and the intermediate plate 9 is moved away from the flywheel 7 by springs (20) during clutch disengagement effected by radial release levers 4, axial separation of the intermediate plate 9 and flywheel 7 during clutch disengagement is automatically adjusted to take up wear by an abutment plate 15 frictionally connected to the intermediate plate 9 and co-operating with abutment surfaces 32, 33 fast with the flywheel 7. As shown, each abutment plate 15 is held by a spring 11 between friction plates 12 carried by a pin 14 connected to the intermediate plate 9 by a bracket 10. The force of the spring 11 is such that it permits the abutment plate 15 to move relative to the plate 9 to take up wear when the plate 15 engages the abutment 33 during clutch engagement but prevents movement of the plate 15 relative to the intermediate plate 9 when the plate 15 engages the abutment 32 under the action of the springs (20) during clutch disengagement. In Fig. 7 (not shown), the pins 14 are omitted and the abutment plate 15 is held between friction discs (12<SP>1</SP>) carried by the intermediate plate 9 and bracket (10<SP>1</SP>).</p> |
