The felt passes over an elongate vent to which suction is applied and then an elongate nozzle from which an air jet is directed upwardly obliquely onto the underside of the felt. The air jet passes into the felt and then downwardly into the vent carrying water and impurities with it. Pref. the vent is defined between parallel plates and the downstream plate has a chamfered upper edge so that the felt is sucked into the mouth of the vent to open the bottom face and close the top face of the felt. The device operates efficiently at high felt speeds.
