A novel refractory ceramic brick consists of 90-99 (preferably 93-97) wt.% metal oxide matrix material and 1-10 (preferably 3-7) wt.% thermally stable hollow filler bodies of less than 5 mm size. Preferably, the filler is a metal oxide material similar to the matrix material or a material which forms a spinel with the matrix material, the matrix material preferably consisting of sintered magnesia, alumina, corundum, zirconia or spinel.
