A gas containing H 2 and CO is made by cracking isobutyraldehyde at a temperature in the range 600‹ to 900‹ C. over a nickel catalyst in the presence of steam. The pressure may be elevated, e.g. 15 to 25 atmos. gauge, and there must be at least 3 moles of steam per gram atom of aldehyde carbon. The steam and isobutyraldehydehyde may be preheated to 500‹ to 650‹ C., and hydrogen, e.g. recycled product gas, may be added to the reactants to prevent formation of propylene during preheating. The catalyst may contain 5 to 25% b.w. nickel. In specific examples the product gas consists of H 2 , CO, CO 2 and CH 4 .</p> |
